Deaths of note from around the world:

Leonard Kerpelman, 88: Best known for representing atheist Madalyn Murray O’Hair in the landmark 1963 Supreme Court case that outlawed prayer in public schools. Died Sept. 26 in Baltimore.

Herman Wallace, 71: Man who spent much of the past 41 years in solitary confinement after being convicted in the fatal 1972 stabbing of a prison guard. His legal appeals brought his freedom less than a week before his death when a federal judge in Baton Rouge ruled his indictment had been unconstitutional because the grand jury excluded women. Died Friday in New Orleans.

Paul Desmarais Sr., 86: The Canadian billionaire with a net worth of about $5.1 billion who built one of the country’s biggest insurance and money-management fortunes after inheriting a fleet of buses in a mining town. Died Tuesday.

Carlo Lizzani, 91: Filmmaker and a much-lauded protagonist of Italian Neorealism. Died Saturday in Rome.
