Deaths of note from around the world:

William Weaver, 90: Translator whose translations of works by modern masters like Italo Calvino, Umberto Eco and Primo Levi helped lift Italian literature to prominence among readers of English. Died Tuesday in Rhinebeck, N.Y.

Alex Calderwood, 45: A founder of the Ace Hotel chain, whose quirky vintage interiors influenced the industry and were the backdrop for countless Instagram pictures. Died Thursday.

Bobbie Handman, 85: A behind-the-scenes force in Democratic politics, a theater preservationist and the first person to be awarded the National Medal of Arts for advocacy. Died Thursday at her home in Manhattan, N.Y.

Saul Kagan, 91: A former refugee who for decades led the Jewish service organization that was primarily responsible for securing more than $70 billion in restitution for Holocaust survivors and their heirs. Died Nov. 8 in Manhattan, N.Y.

Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre, 77: A saxophonist who was a founding member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, a pioneering Chicago avant-garde coalition. Died Nov. 9 in the Bronx, N.Y.
