Advent calendars offer a daily dose of cheer

With origins tracing back to the 19th century, advent calendars have, over the years, become a favorite holiday tradition of families around the world as a way to count the days until Christmas.
Today’s advent calendars, most of which start with Dec. 1, range in style from versions filled with chocolates and other treats, to more elaborate creations that play Christmas tunes. They’re carried at big-box, home goods, specialty and online retailers.
Amid the holiday whirlwind that’s already begun, here’s a look at festive options to help us remember that the Big Day is on its way.
