North Lake girls roll — Kendra Murphy scored 12 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead North Lake to a 39-14 nonleague home win over the Culver junior varsity on Monday night at North Lake. Murphy added four assists and two blocked shots for North Lake, which improved to 4-1.
Culver JV no match for North Lake boys — Daniel Libolt scored 15 points, Ethan Murphy added 11 and Matt Henkel scored 10 to go with 17 rebounds to lead the North Lake boys basketball team over the Culver junior varsity 59-20 on Monday night at North Lake. The win took North Lake’s record to 1-3 on the season.
No. 8 Duke beats Gardner-Webb — Freshman Jabari Parker scored 21 points to help No. 8 Duke beat Gardner-Webb 85-66 on Monday night in Durham, N.C. Andre Dawkins added a season-high 18 points for the Blue Devils (8-2), who were playing their first game in nearly two weeks. Duke’s offense came out strong and shot 50 percent with nine 3-pointers, maintaining a double-digit lead for most of the game even though they didn’t do a lot to slow the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ own hot shooting.

Oregon cornerback Hill suspended after arrest — Oregon cornerback Troy Hill has been suspended indefinitely by the No. 10 Ducks following his arrest on Friday. Details about the arrest, first reported by Comcast SportsNet Northwest, were not immediately released by the Eugene Police Department. Hill entered a not guilty plea to misdemeanor charges of menacing and criminal mischief. His next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 21. Oregon coach Mark Helfrich released a statement Monday saying everyone affiliated with the program is held to a high standard of conduct, and expected to represent the university with “class, pride and integrity.” Helfrich said the school would wait until the legal process has finished before making a further determination of Hill’s status.
Auburn’s Malzahn takes top coach honor — Auburn’s Gus Malzahn is the winner of the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award presented by the Football Writers Association of America. Malzahn had led the Tigers (12-1) to the BCS national championship game in his first season after taking over a team that went 3-9 in 2012. He is the third coach to win the award in the first season with a school, joining Ralph Friedgen of Maryland in 2001 and Tom Cahill of Army in 1966.

MLB, Japanese baseball reach new posting deal — Major League Baseball and Nippon Professional Baseball have finalized a new posting system that caps the fee for players at $20 million, a deal that may lead to star pitcher Masahiro Tanaka going on the market. Under the rules of the three-year agreement announced Monday, a Japanese club may make players available between Nov. 1 and Feb. 1 and may set a price of up to $20 million. Starting with the day after a player is posted and continuing for 30 days, any big league team willing to pay the fee may attempt to sign the player.

Klitschko leaves boxing to pursue politics — Vitali Klitschko is leaving boxing to concentrate on Ukrainian politics and his role as an opposition leader. Klitschko vacated his WBC world heavyweight title on Monday and said he doesn’t expect to fight again as he pursues a presidential bid in his home country, where citizens have been protesting for weeks in Kiev over President Viktor Yanukovych’s decision to shun closer ties with the European Union and push his country toward Russia.
