The little coffee business that Scott and Anna Witham opened in Madras in 2007 moved to Bend early this year. Located around the corner and down an alley from the PoetHouse Art studio and gallery, it seems to appeal to an alternative and artistic crowd. Indeed, the walls of Lone Pine are hung with a variety of works in different media by Central Oregon artists.

But any coffee shop is ultimately judged by the quality of its product. Lone Pine’s owners consider themselves perfectionists in the art of roasting beans. Coffee is drum-roasted daily in small batches; spent grounds are composted, and unsold coffee is donated to local non profits. A selection of pastries is baked fresh daily by the Sparrow Bakery.
