Now is the time when lists featuring the biggest-selling books and movies of the year appear. We made our own list of Central Oregon’s top movies and books, according to the Deschutes Public Library system, Paulina Springs Books and Sisters Movie House.

Here’s a peek at the most popular media consumed by Central Oregonians in 2013. (Note: These lists were compiled in the days before Christmas.)

Paulina Springs Books in Sisters

1) “Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail” by Cheryl Strayed — This Oregon writer chronicles her personal and physical journey as she treks the PCT through California and Oregon.

2) “One Glorious Ambition: The Compassionate Crusade of Dorothea Dix, a Novel” by Jane Kirkpatrick — Local author writes a novel about Dix, a real-life woman who crusaded for the rights of the mentally ill.

3) “The Orchardist” by Amanda Coplin — Oregon author sets this novel in an orchard at the turn of the 20th century. The plot involves two pregnant teenage girls who seek refuge there in the orchard.

4) “100 Hikes in the Central Oregon Cascades (4th ed.)” by William Sullivan — This is the local wilderness expert’s most recent exploration of the best hikes in our region.

5) “Random Acts of Kindness” by Daphne Rose Kingma — This book is particularly aimed at children and educators, with the intention of inspiring acts of kindness.

6) “Dream Again” by Dennis McGregor — This is a children’s book written and illustrated by Sisters artist and musician McGregor.

7) “Snow Child” by Eowyn Ivey — Selected as the Novel Idea community reading book for 2013, this book tells the story of a couple in Alaska in 1920 who meet a child seemingly created out of the snow.

8) “Cascade Summer: My Adventure on Oregon’s Pacific Crest Trail” by Bob Welch — Longtime columnist for the Register-Guard in Eugene writes about his efforts to hike the Pacific Crest Trail in Oregon in 2011.

9) “Between Heaven and Texas” by Marie Bostwick — This novel from best-selling author Bostwick tells the story of a woman in a small Texas town and the lessons she learns about sewing, love and family.

10) “A Serpent’s Tooth: A Walt Longmire Mystery” by Craig Johnson — The ninth volume in this series following a Wyoming sheriff features a lost boy looking for his mother.

Paulina Springs Books in Redmond

1) “Snow Child” by Eowyn Iv ey

2) “Bend, Overall” by Scott Cook — This hiking book is filled with humor as well as helpful information about local outdoor spots.

3) “One Glorious Ambition: The Compassionate Crusade of Dorothea Dix, a Novel” by Jane Kirkpatrick

4) “Red White Black: A True Story of Race and Rodeo” by Rick Steber — This book by local Western writer Steber follows three men from three different ethnic backgrounds as they compete at the Pendleton Round-Up in 1911.

5) “Serpent’s Tooth: A Walt Longmire Mystery” by Craig Johnson

6) “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!” by Mo Willems — Pigeon is at it again in this funny book from prolific children’s author Willems.

7) “Via LacTea: A Woman of a Certain Age Walks The Camino” by Ellen Waterston — Waterston, a Bend author, penned a novel in verse of a woman walking along the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route in Spain.

8) “Sweet Revenge of Celia Door” by Karen Finneyfrock — This is a book aimed at teens and tells the story of Celia, who is entering her freshman year of high school and must choose between revenge and friendship.

9) “Kenny & the Dragon” by Tony DiTerlizzi — A sweet children’s book about a rabbit that’s friends with both a dragon and a knight set to do battle.

10) “Pie” by Sarah Weeks — Aimed at children in elementary and middle school, this book tells the story of a woman’s famous pie crust recipe that she willed to her cat, Lardo.

10) “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” by J.K. Rowling — The first book in the Harry Potter series is still fantastically popular.

Top teen titles

(The Hunger Games trilogy tops the teen reading list, with its tale of Katniss forced to battle other youths to the death and a societal uprising.)

(These are the first two books in this trilogy — the third, “Allegiant,” came out late in 2013 — in which society is divided into factions based on the individual’s traits and teenagers must choose which faction to join.)

6) “The Lightning Thief” by Rick Riordan — This is the first book in the incredibly popular “Percy Jackson and The Olympians” series.

7) “The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green — Green delivers a poignant book about a girl who is dying of cancer, the unsentimental way she views the world and the deep relationship she forms with a boy she meets in a support group.

8) “Before I Go to Sleep: A Novel” by S.J. Watson — This mystery follows Christine, who loses her memories every time she falls asleep.

9) “City of Bones” by Cassandra Clare — Book one in the “Mortal Instruments” series follows Clary, a girl in New York City who is sucked into the dark, mysterious world of Shadowhunters.

10) “Life of Pi: A Novel” by Yann Martel — A boy is adrift on an ocean in a small boat, his only companion a hungry tiger — this is the plot of this best-selling book.

3) “Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking” by Susan Cain — This book examines the traits of extroverts and introverts and makes the case that our society has come to favor extroverts too much.

4) “In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin” by Erik Larson — A true story of an American ambassador to Germany in 1933 and his family and the complicated, sometimes frightening experiences they shared.

5) “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot — Skloot tells the story of an poor woman whose cells have been used in medical research and experiments throughout the world.

6) “No Easy Day: The Autobiography of a Navy SEAL: The Firsthand Account of the Mission that Killed Osama bin Laden” by Mark Owen — A first-person account of the execution and planning of the raid on bin Laden.

7) “Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health” by William Davis — Davis lays out the case against wheat.

8) “Killing Kennedy: The End of Camelot” by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard — This book offers a historical narrative of how Kennedy was killed and the cultural aftermath of that assassination.

9) “Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey Into the Afterlife” by Eben Alexander — A neurosurgeon describes his near death experience while he was in a coma for seven days; he woke up believing in God and a soul.

10) “Behind the Beautiful Forevers: (Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity)” by Katherine Boo — This book chronicles the families who live in a slum near luxury hotels in Mumbai as they strive for a better life.

Top adult fiction titles

1) “Gone Girl: A Novel” by Gillian Flynn — This blockbuster book is part mystery, part character study of a modern married couple.

2) “A Wanted Man: A Jack Reacher Novel” by Lee Child — The latest Jack Reacher story follows him from wanting to catch a ride to unraveling a large conspiracy.

3) “The Racketeer: A Novel” by John Grisham — In Grisham’s latest book, the body of a federal judge is found at his lakeside cabin alongside his young secretary.

4) “Notorious Nineteen: A Stephanie Plum Novel” by Janet Evanovich — Plum investigates the disappearance of a man on trial for embezzling millions from an assisted living facility.

5) “The Casual Vacancy” by J.K. Rowling — This is Rowling’s first novel for adults and it is set in the seemingly quiet village of Pagford.

6) “The Snow Child: A Novel” by Eowyn Ivey

7) “Mad River” by John Sandford — Virgil Flowers investigates teens running through the Midwest on a killing spree.

8) “The Black Box: A Novel” by Michael Connelly — Harry Bosch links a bullet to a 20-year-old murder of a female photographer during the 1992 Los Angeles riots.

9) “NYPD Red” by James Patterson and Marshall Karp — This book follows a segment of the NYPD dedicated to the most powerful and wealthy residents of Manhattan, some of whom are being targeted by a killer.

10) “The Forgotten” by David Baldacci — John Puller, an Army Special Agent, is investigating the murder of his aunt in Florida.

1) “Fifty Shades of Grey” by E.L. James — James rocked the publishing world with her tremendously popular and titillating, erotic trilogy that follows a college student seduced by a businessman.

1) “Argo” — The 2013 Academy Awards best picture winner is the true story of how a group of Americans at the embassy in Iran escaped thanks to a fake movie.

2) “The Descendants” — The 2011 film by Alexander Payne stars George Clooney as a man who uncovers unhappy truths about his wife after she falls into a coma in their home state of Hawaii.

3) “Lincoln” — Steven Spielberg directs this historical drama about President Abraham Lincoln, with an Oscar-winning performance in the lead role by Daniel Day Lewis.

4) “Life of Pi” — Ang Lee directs the 2012 movie of the best-selling book about a boy adrift at sea with a tiger as companion.

5) “Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” — This 2012 part comedy, part drama, follows a group of British retirees who move to a hotel in India.

6) “Skyfall” — The latest James Bond film stars Daniel Craig, with Javier Bardem as the villain.

7) “The Artist” — This silent French movie won the 2012 Academy Awards best picture honor.

8) “Silver Linings Playbook” — Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence star in this dramatic romantic comedy about two messed up individuals living in Philadelphia.

9) “The Help” — Based on a best-selling book, this movie tells the story of a young white woman in Jackson, Miss., who wants to help the struggle of the black maids in her town.

10) “Flight” — Denzel Washington earned a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his turn as a heroic, drunken pilot in this drama.

Sisters Movie House

Owner Lisa Clausen said the top-selling movies at her theater differ from those making the national list quite a bit. Nationally, she says, most of the top movies feature superheroes. Meanwhile, the top films in Sisters are usually historical dramas, like “Lee Daniels’ The Butler.”

“We are a bit of an anomaly here. We skew older and towards quality,” said Clausen.

1) “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” — This movie stars Forest Whitaker as a butler who served in the White House for many decades, encountering many different presidential administrations.

2) “Hunger Games: Catching Fire” — The second installment of the Hunger Games series finds Katniss thrown back into the fray of the games, while helping to inspire an uprising.

3) “Captain Phillips” — Tom Hanks stars in this true-life story of an American cargo ship under siege from Somali pirates.

4) “The Heat” — This comedy stars Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy as cops.

5) “Frozen” — Disney princesses star in this animated movie about the bonds of sisterhood.

6) “Monsters University” — Sully and Mike are back in this Pixar prequel that shows the buddies during their college days.

7) “Gravity” — Sandra Bullock is an astronaut adrift in space in this technical feat of a film.

8) “42 ” — This movie tells the story of Jackie Robinson, the first black baseball player in the Major League.

9) “Silver Linings Playbook” — A 2013 best picture nominee.

10) “Saving Mr. Banks” — Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson help tell the complicated story of getting “Mary Poppins” made into a movie.
