4 p.m. on ESPN2, “2014 Australian Open Tennis” — The first Grand Slam event of the tennis year takes place at Melbourne Park as the world’s best players vie in the 2014 Australian Open. Novak Djokovic will defend his singles title on the men’s side against a field that includes Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Andy Murray and David Ferrer — while on the women’s side, Victoria Azarenka will take on all comers, including Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Na Li and Agnieszka Radwanska.

5 p.m. on 5, 8, “The 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards” — When you find a winning formula, you stick with it. Amy Poehler and Tina Fey were a hit hosting team at last year’s Golden Globes, so the “Saturday Night Live” alumnae are back again to preside over the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s traditionally loose-spirited salute to the best of the previous year’s movies and television.

9 p.m. on SHO, “Shameless” — Picking up a few weeks after season three ended, the drama’s fourth season opens on a chilly Chicago winter, as the Gallaghers await news on Frank’s (William H. Macy) condition. The news for other members of the clan is good so far — Fiona (Emmy Rossum) is finally in a stable job and a good relationship, and Lip (Jeremy Allen White) is starting college. Cameron Monaghan also stars in “Simple Pleasures.”

10 p.m. on 6, “The Mentalist” — Jane (Simon Baker) and the FBI investigate the murder of a cartographer who might have uncovered a spy ring. Rigsby and Van Pelt (Owain Yeoman, Amanda Righetti) are on the trail of a conspiracy in the new episode “The Golden Hammer.” Robin Tunney and Tim Kang also star.

10 p.m. on HBO, “Girls” — They’re baack! As the acclaimed comedy series begins its third season, Hannah (Lena Dunham) has settled into home life with Adam (Adam Driver) and is rebooting her writing career, while Marnie (Allison Williams) is recovering from her breakup, and Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet), also newly uncoupled, is trying to strike a balance between school and her social life in the season premiere, “Females Only.”
