Seahawks QB off to spring training — Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson is going to spring training. Wilson sent a tweet Thursday telling Texas Rangers fans he would see them in Surprise, Ariz., on March 3. He included a picture of himself standing in front of Seattle Seahawks helmets while wearing a Texas baseball jersey, and holding another jersey showing the back with his name and No. 3. Texas selected Wilson from the Colorado Rockies in the Triple-A portion of baseball’s December draft at the winter meetings. Wilson played minor league baseball as a second baseman for parts of two seasons before going back to college to play football. He just finished his second NFL season. It is unclear if Wilson will participate in any on-field activities or just visit.

SOCCER

MLS purchases Chivas USA — The troubled tenure of Chivas USA’s Mexican owners, Jorge Vergara and Angelica Fuentes, has ended with Major League Soccer purchasing the team. MLS said Thursday it had assumed operation of the team, which had the second-worst record in the league last year and the league’s worst attendance. Vergara and Fuentes have controlled Chivas Guadalajara since 2002 and held a 50 percent in Chivas USA when it was created in 2004 and started playing in 2005. The pair took operating control of Chivas USA in August 2012 when they bought out former partners Antonio and Lorenzo Cue, who had been running the team. Wilmer Cabrera will remain coach, MLS said.

Lynch’s attorney, Ivan Golde, said Thursday of the plea deal that was reached with the Alameda County District Attorney Office. The plea will be formally entered in court in Oakland, Calif., today. Lynch was arrested in July 2012 on investigation of driving under the influence after he was pulled over on a freeway in Oakland.

Tavares was hurt by a big hit along the boards by Latvia’s Arturs Kulda in the second period of Canada’s 2-1 victory Wednesday night. The 23-year-old forward is the league’s third-leading scorer with 66 points in 59 games. He has never had significant injury problems in his five-season professional career, playing in 350 of a possible 354 games.
