Beavers top Utes for ninth straight win — Kavin Keyes homered and Andrew Moore allowed one run over 6 1⁄3 innings Saturday to lead Oregon State to a 5-1 Pac-12 victory over Utah at Smith’s Ballpark in Salt Lake City. Keyes, whose first home run of the season gave the Beavers a 1-0 lead in the second inning, had two hits and an RBI for OSU, as did Trever Morrison. Moore allowed eight hits, striking out three and walking none en route to his second victory in three decisions this season. Two Utah pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts against the Beavers, who had 10 hits. Oregon State (2-0 Pac-12, 17-3 overall) goes for a sweep of the three-game series with Utah (0-2, 8-9) today starting at noon PDT.
Ducks top Trojans for first Pac-12 victory — Mitchell Tolman hit two doubles and drove in four runs Saturday to pace Oregon to a 7-2 win over USC at PK Park in Eugene. The victory was the first of the season for the Ducks in Pac-12 play and evened the series at 1-1. Austin Grebeck, Tyler Baumgartner and A.J. Balta joined Tolman with two hits apiece for Oregon (1-1 Pac-12, 13-5 overall), which broke the game open with a four-run third inning and led 7-0 after four. Starting pitcher Matt Krook allowed two hits and two earned runs over 6 1⁄3 innings to earn the victory. Omar Cotto’s pinch-hit single in the seventh accounted for both runs for USC (1-1, 10-7). The series concludes today starting at noon.

Pedregon tops Funny Car qualifying — Cruz Pedregon topped Funny Car qualifying in the NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla., for the third year in a row and fifth time overall, powering to a 4.068-second run at 308.21 mph Saturday in his Toyota Camry. The 1998 Gainesville winner will open today against 16-time world champion John Force. Shawn Langdon led in Top Fuel, Dave Connolly topped the Pro Stock field, and Michael Ray was the fastest in Pro Stock Motorcycle. Langdon improved his leading time from Friday with a 3.776 at 320.58, Connolly had a 6.476 at 213.98 from Friday, and Ray finished at 6.793 at 197.74 on a Buell.

Hendricks wins UFC welterweight championship — Johny Hendricks won the vacant UFC welterweight championship Saturday night, unanimously outpointing Robbie Lawler in five rounds at UFC 171 in Dallas. Tyron Woodley won the co-feature, stopping Carlos Condit to set up a likely title bout against Hendricks in the 170-pound division. Fighting in Hendricks’ adopted hometown, Lawler opened a cut beside Hendricks’ right eye in the fourth round. All three judges scored the fight 28-27 for Hendricks. The title was vacated by Georges St. Pierre, who had held it since 2007. In his final defense, St. Pierre took a disputed split decision over Hendricks in November.

Djokovic, Federer to meet for Indian Wells title — Novak Djokovic beat John Isner 7-5, 6-7 (2), 6-1 on Saturday at Indian Wells, Calif., to reach the final of the BNP Paribas Open, where he will resume his longtime rivalry with Roger Federer in a matchup of former top-ranked players. Federer had a much easier time in the semifinals, beating Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine 6-3, 6-1 and put himself in position to win a fifth career title at Indian Wells. Federer leads their rivalry 17-15, having beaten Djokovic two weeks ago in the semifinals at Dubai. Before that, Djokovic had won three straight times over the Swiss star. No. 2 seed Agnieszka Radwanska will play Flavia Pennetta in the women’s final today before the men’s title is decided.
