Plantrae visits Dojo in Bend

If there is an artist that embodies the intersection, musically speaking, of our current time and place, it might just be Plantrae, the electro-orchestral DJ/producer playing Dojo in downtown Bend tonight.

What do I mean by that? Excellent question.

You see, Plantrae (aka Zak Hoya) is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist and drummer who, at some point, discovered electronic sounds and began making beats-and-bass music. In the past couple of years, he has been merging the two in a very organic way, layering improvised viola performance over top of midtempo glitch-hop.

The result is very “Oregon in 2014,” where the neo-hippie Burner vibe of Southern Oregon, the woodsy indie-folk scene of Portland and hip dance-music gatherings like What The Festival are inter-connected by verdant and mysterious Cascadian forests. It’s ancient meets futuristic, classic meets modern, elegance meets whomp, all in one.

Does that sound like your kind of thing? If you’ve even gotten this far, I’d bet that it does. Google Plantrae and sample his sound on Bandcamp or Soundcloud before heading out tonight.

Plantrae, with Lyfe; 10 tonight; $5; Dojo, 852 N.W. Brooks St., Bend; www.dojobend.com.
