Saturday: Hoodoo Spring Fling

Hoodoo Ski Area near Sisters will be open Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., before closing for the season.

Hoodoo’s Spring Fling end-of-season celebration is scheduled for Saturday. Activities include pond skimming, ultra cross and prizes.

The ski area did not begin operations this season until Feb. 7 due to a dearth of snowfall on Santiam Pass, where Hoodoo is located. Hoodoo typically opens in early to mid-December.

The snow pack at Hoodoo was about 67 inches as of Tuesday, according to hoodoo.com, and the ski area has received 229 inches of snowfall this season.

Land trust offers wildflower hikes

The Deschutes Land Trust is offering a series of hikes focused on wildflowers. The first guided hike takes place April 18 at Alder Creek, followed by one at Whychus Canyon on April 25. The wildflower hike will take place throughout spring and summer and will highlight early bitterroot to summer lilies. Locations for the hikes include Camp Polk Meadow, Coffer Ranch, Metolius Preserve, Rimrock Ranch and Spring Creek as well as Alder Creek and Whychus Canyon.

In all, 12 guided hikes are planned, focusing on wildflowers. The land trust has also released details about more than 100 free guided hikes planned at its protected sites from April to November.
