Summit did not win the gold bracket championship, but when the Storm’s lone loss came at the hands of arguably the top Class 6A team in the state, they will take it.
Still, with a 5-3 win over West Salem and a 6-2 victory against Tualatin, Summit salvaged a first-place finish in the silver bracket of the Bend Invitational girls tennis tournament on Saturday.
Lindsey Brodeck led the way with matching 6-1, 6-0 wins in her two No. 1 singles matches for the Storm, whose lone setback in the two-day tournament was dealt by Jesuit on Friday. Autumn Layden also went 2-0 in singles play for Summit, including a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 4 singles against Tualatin at Summit High.
Two-time defending 6A state champion Jesuit defeated Beaverton 5-3 in the championship of the gold bracket at Juniper Park after beating St. Mary’s 8-0 in the semifinals.
Ridgeview, which lost to Tualatin 6-2 before beating West Salem 7-1 in the consolation final of the silver bracket at Summit, was paced by its top singles players, Caitlin Carr and Riley Hanks. Both players picked up convincing wins against Tualatin and repeated against West Salem.
Highlighted by Sierra Winch, who went 2-0 in No. 1 singles play, Bend High defeated Mountain View 5-3 at Summit but fell to Oregon Episcopal 5-3 at Mountain View in the bronze bracket. The Cougars rebounded for a 6-2 win over Sisters, which lost 8-0 to OES of Portland.
