Local fighter improves to 5-0 — Redmond’s Colton Howard topped Denver fighter Andrew Lipp on April 12 at the Bend Budofights to improve to 5-0 on his career. Howard won what was scheduled to be a five-round fight when the referee stopped the match in the fourth round.
SNOWBOARDING
Local named to U.S. halfpipe rookie team — Bend’s Nate Jacobson has been invited to participate on the U.S. Snowboard halfpipe rookie team. Jacobson, who rides locally with the Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Foundation, placed sixth at the 2013 USASA national championships. Jacobson concluded the 2013-14 snowboard season with a bronze medal at the USASA open class nationals halfpipe.
Gymnastics
Area boys medal at regional competition— Acrovision’s Blaine Davis won the pommel horse event in the Level 9 boys 13 and over division at the Men’s Gymnastics Region III meet at Lewis & Clark College in Portland on April 12 and 13. Davis, who placed second in the all-around in his division, highlighted a strong showing by Bend gymnasts. Zane Viles earned a silver medal in the parallel bars (Level 5, age 7-8); Nathan Vezina was the runner-up in the floor exercise (Level 5, 9-10); and Travis Fields placed second in the parallel bars (Level 7, 13 and over). En route to his second-place all-around finish, Davis took second in the floor exercise, third in the rings, fourth in the vault, and second on the parallel bars.
RODEO
Mote wins average at National Circuit Finals — Bobby Mote, a part-time resident of Culver, won the bareback average at the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Guthrie, Okla., on April 12. Mote recorded 165 points on two head in the first and second rounds of the NCFR, earning $4,525. He also put together solid rides in the semifinals (81 points, second, $4,113) and finals (84 points, tie for first, $4,113).
RUGBY
Blues win on the road — The Bend Blues topped The Valley Rams 26-17 in McMinnville on Saturday in a Rugby Oregon Club match. Keegan Bloss led the Blues with two tries and three conversions. The Blues are back on the road this Saturday at Pendleton.
