History
THIS DATE IN BASEBALL
———
July 27
1918 — Brooklyn rookie Henry Heitman completed one of the shortest careers in major league history. Heitman appeared on the mound against the St. Louis Cardinals, gave up four consecutive hits and then left the game, never to play a major league game again.
2011 — Seattle snapped its 17-game losing streak as Ichiro Suzuki and rookie Dustin Ackley led a 17-hit attack in a 9-2 win over the New York Yankees. It was the longest skid in the major leagues since Kansas City lost 19 in 2005.
American League
Mariners 4, Orioles 3
SEATTLE — Chris Young allowed two hits in seven shutout innings, and Seattle snapped a four-game losing streak. Dustin Ackley doubled twice and scored two runs for the Mariners. Robinson Cano had an RBI double. After the Orioles took advantage of an error by All-Star third baseman Kyle Seager to score three times in the eighth, Fernando Rodney closed it out for his 200th career save. Young, who did not pitch in the majors last season, walked three and matched his season high with eight strikeouts.
