In 2007 and early 2008, Midwestern throwback rap duo The Cool Kids looked like hip-hop’s next big thing. In the heyday of tastemaking music blogs, significant hype gathered around Chuck Inglish and Mikey Rocks’ stripped-down, ’80s-inspired boom-bap.

It never really happened, though. The Kids’ 2008 EP “Bake Sale” was excellent but brief, and their debut full-length album, “When Fish Ride Bicycles” took forever to come out, finally doing so in 2011. By then, it felt like the window was closing.

The Cool Kids continue on, however, as a critics’ fave and underground stalwart. And earlier this year, Inglish unveiled his first solo album, “Convertibles,” which finds his typically deadpan flow set against more ambitious, pop-focused beats. He brings in some high-powered guests, too: Action Bronson, Chance the Rapper, Chromeo, Mac Miller and more.

So “Convertibles” may be Inglish’s reach for broader success, but it’s pretty good and the dude is a cornerstone of 21st century indie-rap. Go see him.
