Volcanic hosts The Appleseed Collective

If you want a taste of the Sisters Folk Festival but don’t have a pass or don’t want to make the trip to Sisters, consider hitting Volcanic Theatre Pub on Tuesday night, where The Appleseed Collective will perform.

This musical gang of Michiganders plays mellow Americana music that pulls in a little bit of this and a little bit of that from across the roots-music spectrum. Stir up The Appleseed Collective’s sonic stew and you’ll see some bluegrass and folk, some Southern soul and Western swing, some throwback ragtime and hot jazz occasionally rise to the surface.

All of it is done in an elegant sort of way; this isn’t a rag-tag bunch of string-band scruffs. The Appleseed Collective’s songs are like small chunks of eclectic American music, harvested from regions far and wide, perfectly preserved and sitting in a display case. They are well thought out and well put together examples of what happens when five sets of talented hands and open minds come together and start a band.

Don’t let my “display case” talk fool you, though: These cats also know how to fill a darkened music hall with the kind of sound you’ll want to move to, whether it’s a gentle sway or something more energetic. Hear what they do at www.theappleseedcollective.com.

The Appleseed Collective; 9 p.m. Tuesday; $5; Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Drive, Bend; www.volcanictheatrepub.com or 541-323-1881.
