Lisicki wins Hong Kong Open — Sabine Lisicki won her first WTA title in three years by defeating Karolina Pliskova 7-5, 6-3 in the final of the Hong Kong Open on Sunday. No. 36-ranked Pliskova squandered a 5-1 lead in the match after she twice broke the top-seeded German in the first set before losing the next six games. Lisicki fired five aces in the second set and twice broke her Czech opponent’s serve, in the fourth and eight games, to clinch the final in just under 90 minutes.

Lucic-Baroni holds off Venus for title in Quebec — Top-seed Venus Williams fell to Croatia’s Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 6-4, 6-3 for the Coupe Banque Nationale title in Quebec City, Canada, on Sunday.
Knapp wins first career title at Tashkent Open — Karin Knapp of Italy won her first career WTA title in her 12th year as a pro when she won the Tashkent Openin in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, by beating defending champion Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia in the final on Saturday. Knapp saved nine break points, including all five in the first set, in prevailing 6-2, 7-6 (4).

Nicholls State coach resigns — Charlie Stubbs is resigning as head football coach at Nicholls State University, citing “major health reasons” that a university spokesman isn’t elaborating on. A longtime assistant at a number of colleges, Nicholls State was the first collegiate head coaching job for the 59-year-old Stubbs. He took over in 2010, finishing with a 10-38 record in his four-plus seasons. The Colonels lost to Division II Henderson State Saturday, 27-10, falling to 0-3 this year.

Driver dies after RV rolls during race in Iowa — A driver died at an Iowa race course after an RV rolled over during a race in Cedar Rapids Saturday night, and police are investigating. Cedar Rapids Police spokesman Greg Buelow told KCRG the fatal crash happened during a “Race ’Em or Wreck ’Em” event where school buses were being raced against RVs. During the race, a school bus struck the rear of the RV as the vehicles entered a corner, and the RV rolled onto its roof. Paramedics worked for more than half an hour to extract the driver from the wreck. The rest of the scheduled racing for the night was canceled.

Senior officials were given luxury watches — FIFA has acknowledged that its executive committee members were given luxury watches by the Brazilian Football Confederation at the World Cup and says its ethics committee is “dealing with the matter.” British newspaper Sunday Times reported that senior FIFA officials were given Swiss watches worth $25,000 in gift bags left in their hotel rooms when they arrived in Brazil for the tournament. FIFA’s ethics rules forbid officials from accepting gifts of more than symbolic value.

Van Baarle wins Tour of Britain — Dutch rider Dylan van Baarle won the Tour of Britain on Sunday, holding onto the lead despite a strong time trial by former champion Bradley Wiggins on a final day featuring two stages in central London. Van Baarle, who rides for Garmin-Sharp, finished 10 seconds clear of Poland’s Michal Kwiatkowski. Wiggins was third, a further 12 seconds back.
