Central Oregon trail update
Published 12:00 am Wednesday, October 22, 2014
Expect a change in weather with the fall transition; more snow and precipitation are expected.
Trail users, especially in the backcountry, should go prepared with all the essentials. Unexpected snowfall can move in very rapidly.
Some of the summer trails may have substantial blowdown during this time of year as the focus shifts to winter trail maintenance.
Sun-Lava and Blackrock trail closures began Monday and will run through the end of November as crews conduct trail work and maintenance. The section of the Sun-Lava path at the Forest Road 9702 junction with Deschutes River Trail at the Benham Falls bridge will be closed.
The section of Blackrock trail from the railroad to Benham East will also be closed. The Benham footbridge will be closed intermittently. Detours are in place for the closures.
A fish recovery project is scheduled to begin today or Thursday from the Meadow Picnic Area to Lava Island. Crews will be moving fish from isolated ponds back to the Deschutes River to prevent die off due to low water levels.
Riparian restoration on the Metolius River trail will continue through Friday.
