After surviving a hard-fought preseason, one that set Summit up with a 5-1 record, Jon Frazier decided to give his players a rest, allow them to recuperate and begin the Les Schwab Oregon Holiday Hoopfest with fresh legs.

Heading into Saturday night’s contest against North Eugene, and after a five days off, Frazier was a bit nervous that his Storm players would come out sloppy, sluggish and rusty.

A few minutes into the contest, though, Frazier’s anxiety was eased.

Following an 8-2 spurt to open the first round of the boys basketball tournament, Summit built a 20-4 first-quarter lead and then ran away with a 75-25 victory over the Highlanders.

“I thought there would be a little bit of sloppiness, but they executed really well,” Frazier said. “It was a good start to the tournament. You can’t win the tournament unless you win the first day.”

Max Michalski, whose second and third 3-pointers of the game fueled the Storm’s 9-0 run in the third quarter and pushed the advantage to 53-15, finished with a game-high 15 points to help Summit (6-1 overall) net its third straight win.

“We were passing the ball well and got into transition,” said Michalski, noting how the Storm’s success stems from solid passing. “You pass the ball the first time, everything opens up. We shared the ball really well and had good chemistry.”

Nick Mason chipped in with 12 points and team-high 16 rebounds for Summit, Kyle Cornett added 12 points, and Chris Mason totaled 10 points and eight boards.

“That’s been the good thing about this team so far,” Frazier said of his team’s scoring depth. “We have four guys that can go double digits every game. They’re a really unselfish group. I don’t think they care who scores. It’s tough because every night we don’t know who’s going to be our guy. But they all contribute a ton.”

Tommy Ahlstrom paced North Eugene (1-8) with eight points and six rebounds, and Aidan Lannom had seven points and three boards. But the Highlanders could not climb out of a 25-point halftime deficit in suffering their third straight setback.

“It was a big one,” Michalski said of the win, which sets Summit up with a 7:30 p.m. semifinal matchup today against Liberty (Wash.) at Summit. “We try to take it one game at a time to take the tournament. We just wanted to focus on this one and progress.”
