Shields, Padres agree to $75 million, 4-year deal — Right-hander James Shields, who helped Kansas City reach the World Series last season, has agreed to a $75 million, four-year contract with the San Diego Padres. The deal includes an option for 2019 and is subject to the successful completion of a physical, which likely will take place today. Shields was 14-8 with a 3.21 ERA last season and declined a $15.3 million qualifying offer from the Royals. An All-Star in 2011, Shields is 114-90 with a 3.72 ERA in nine seasons.

Richard promoted to Seahawks’ defensive coordinator — Kris Richard was promoted Monday to defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks, replacing Dan Quinn, who took over as head coach in Atlanta. Richard has been with the Seahawks since Pete Carroll’s arrival as head coach in 2010, first as an assistant defensive backs coach. Since 2012, Richard has been the head defensive backs coach. Richard, 35, spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Southern Cal on Carroll’s staff before following him to Seattle.

College pace of play not expected to be discussed — The NCAA coordinator of college football officials said Monday he does not expect pace of play to be a major topic when the rules committee meets this week. Rogers Redding said the use of technology on the sideline will be a focus during committee meetings today and Wednesday. Redding also said eight-person officiating crews, up from seven, will likely be the norm in FBS next season.
