Dirk Shafer, 52: Former Playgirl magazine centerfold who chronicled his experiences as a closeted gay man in a 1995 mock documentary, “Man of the Year.” Died on Thursday in West Hollywood, California.

Bertrice Small, 77: Convent-educated writer whose dozens of bodice-ripping romance novels titillated readers for decades. Died on Feb. 24 at her home in Southold, New York, leaving her 57th novel unfinished.
