A fine double bill at Volcanic

Last April, we told you all about Esme Patterson — singer, songwriter and then-member of Denver roots-pop group Paper Bird (she left the band last fall) — and her second solo album, “Woman to Woman,” ahead of Patterson’s show at Volcanic Theatre Pub.

“Woman to Woman” has done very well since, earning positive reviews and lots of attention for Patterson, who now lives in Portland. That’s not only because it’s a dazzling work — Patterson’s combo of folk and pop is lithe, likeable and a bit quirky, and her voice is magnetic — but also because of its clever concept: Each track is a response to a well-known pop song written from the perspective of the female character in the song.

So, for example, “Valentine” is a response to Elvis Costello’s “Alison” in the voice of Alison. “Never Chase a Man” gives voice to Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.” “The Glow” may be the prettiest song here, a response to the Beach Boys’ “Caroline, No.” And so on. Just last month, Patterson tacked on a few extra songs to the European release of “Woman to Woman.”

And on Wednesday, she’ll be back at Volcanic. If you missed her last April, don’t make that mistake again. You can learn more and hear songs at www.esmepatterson.com.

Esme Patterson and William Elliott Whitmore; 8 p.m. Wednesday; $5; Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Drive, Bend; www.volcanictheatrepub.com or 541-382-1881.
