– Margaret Anne “Peg” Ontko (Mahoney) went home to her heavenly Father on Thursday, April 30th, 2015. She was 86 years of age. The Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be Friday, May 8th, at the Prineville Funeral Home Heritage Chapel at 6:00 PM, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial Saturday, May 9th, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Prineville at 9:00 AM. The Ontko family has entrusted these arrangements with the staff of Prineville Funeral Home.Peg was born on May 30, 1928, eight miles west of Big Timber, Montana to Claude and Anna (Rowan) Mahoney. She was reared on a farm near Platte Lake, South Dakota, and was educated in White Lake, South Dakota, graduating in 1946. She attended South Dakota University in Brookings, South Dakota received her Master’s Degree in 1964 from Southern Oregon University. She married Andrew “Gale” Ontko on February 20, 1954 and was blessed with four children: Elizabeth, Greg, John, and Stephen.She started her teaching career at the in Pazour, South Dakota grade school known as the “Little Red-School House” in 1948, and continued at Ochoco Grade School when she moved to Prineville in 1952. She retired from teaching in 1990.Peg was a lifelong sports fan as well as an active participant and organizer of the Women’s Athletic Associate. She enjoyed golf, softball, card playing, sporting events, history, and driving the streets of Prineville with grandkids. She also traveled 16 countries across 3 continents and visited 40 states via the Elderhostel Programs, Globus Tours, and solo traveling to visit family and friends. Peg also had an interest in genealogy that traced the Mahoney and Rowan Family Trees back to Ireland’s 17th and 18th centuries. She was a member of the PWAA, the EAGLES, TORA (Teachers of Retirees), PERS, the Lookout Grange, and the American Legion.She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Ellen Ontko of Kalispell, MT; Andrew Gregory Ontko (Svetlana) of Powell Butte, OR; John Patrick Ontko (Tia) and Stephen Daniel Ontko (Lori) of Prineville, OR; numerous nieces and nephews including Mark and Mary Jean Luckey of Prineville, OR; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and her friend Pam. – She is preceded in death by her parents Claude and Anna Mahoney; a sister, Mary Ellen Luckey; brothers, Pat and Jim Mahoney; a granddaughter, Rebecca Ontko; and husband Gale Ontko.
