Two Redmond Proficiency Academy students are in juvenile custody in the wake of an altercation at the school Thursday morning, according to the Redmond School District.
At about 7:45 a.m. Thursday, a student suffered non-life threatening injuries after he was stabbed by another student. He was taken by ambulance to St. Charles Bend, where he was treated and released.
The alleged assailant, 14, reportedly used an inch-long knife that detached from the handle during the altercation. He was lodged on suspicion of second-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon. A third student, also 14, who allegedly provided the knife, has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit second-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon, according to a news release from Kelly Richard, a Redmond School District spokeswoman.
Both are lodged in the Deschutes County Juvenile Detention Facility. The Redmond Police Department is investigating the incident, in cooperation with Redmond Proficiency Academy and the school district.
“Any student who participates in acts of violence is subject to disciplinary action, including expulsion,” under school district policy, Richard wrote. “Additionally, any student who brings a weapon on school property shall be expelled for a period of no less than one year.” Counseling was available for students at the school Friday.
“Redmond Proficiency Academy and the Redmond School District are deeply saddened by this event and would like to express their heartfelt condolences to the victim and his family,” Richard wrote.
