BASKETBALL
Skiles is new Magic man — Scott Skiles was introduced as the new Orlando Magic coach Friday. The 51-year-old Skiles was a member of the Magic’s inaugural team in 1989-90 and played point guard for a total of five seasons in Orlando as part of his 10-year playing career. Skiles replaces Jacque Vaughn, who was fired in February. After success in stops in Phoenix, Chicago and Milwaukee, the 13-year veteran NBA coach owns a 443-433 overall coaching record.
Warriors’s Thompson diagnosed with concussion — Golden State guard Klay Thompson has been diagnosed with a concussion and will not practice until he is symptom free. The Warriors announced the diagnosis Friday after Thompson went through neurological tests earlier in the day. The All-Star guard took a knee to the head during Golden State’s Western Conference finals clinching win Wednesday night. Team doctors initially cleared Thompson to return to the game. He ended up not playing, and the team said he started developing symptoms after the game.
CYCLING
Contador has lead cut, still in control — Alberto Contador had 38 seconds sliced off his overall lead in the 19th stage of the Giro d’Italia on Friday, although the Spaniard remained well on course for the title. Italian rival Fabio Aru won the mountain stage with a late breakaway and moved back into second place overall, 4 minutes, 37 seconds behind Contador entering today’s final mountain stage before Sunday’s flat finish in Milan. Aru required nearly 61/2 hours over the 147-mile leg from Gravellona Toce to Cervinia, which included three major climbs, including an uphill finish.
FOOTBALL
Few answers from Patriots camp — New England coach Bill Belichick shed little light Friday in his first public remarks since the report was issued on the Patriots’ use of deflated footballs. He avoided direct answers to most of the 10 questions he was asked about Tom Brady, backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and how the team was handling the fallout from the investigation. Brady, who is appealing his four-game suspension, did not speak with reporters after New England’s organized team activity.
