California’s Kottonmouth Kings may be jumping the gun a bit with their performance at the Domino Room on Monday — marijuana doesn’t become legal for recreational use in Oregon until July 1. Though that has never stopped this band before.
The rap-rock stalwarts continue to sing the praises of their favorite illicit substance on new single “Ganja Glow,” a slick, reggae-inflected track featuring a guest shot from Marlon Asher, who’s also one of the show’s openers.
The track, slated to appear on “Krown Power,” the band’s first album on its new label, United Family Music, also heavily showcases the motormouth rapping of The Dirtball, aka David Alexander. The Prineville native released a handful of solo albums on the Kings’ previous label, Suburban Noize Records, and made such a strong impression the band finally just recruited him in 2010 as an official member.
The founding of the new label comes after a 2013 spat between Kings member Brad Xavier and Suburban Noize co-founder Kevin Zinger. With a new home comes a new beginning for the group, though from the sound of things, this doesn’t seem to have changed the band’s priorities much.
Kottonmouth Kings, with Marlon Asher, Chucky Chuck and C4 Nicky Gritts; 9 p.m. Monday, doors open 8 p.m.; $20 plus fees in advance (ticket outlets listed at the website below), $25 at the door; Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave., Bend; www.randompresents.com.— Brian McElhiney
