Police arrest fleeing suspect

Joe Kline / The Bulletin Bend Police investigate the scene where a driver crashed a truck into a transformer on SE Silver Sage Street and escaped on foot Thursday morning in Bend.

After a manhunt through SE Bend, police arrested a man who fled from a traffic stop on SE Country Club Drive Thursday morning.

Ronald Juarez Wallace, 39, was operating a 2007 Ford Ranger pickup and was stopped for speeding on Knott Road, according to Bend Police Lt Clint Burleigh. Wallace sped off and officers pursued him down Country Club Road, through Murphy Road and into neighborhoods off SE Aberdeen Drive and SE Silver Sage Street.

Wallace hit an electrical transformer, which exploded, then exited the truck, climbed a nearby fence and ran away.

Officers set up a perimeter, K-9s conducted searches to no avail until detectives found Wallace. He was taken into custody without incident on suspicion of reckless driving, attempting to elude by vehicle and on foot, first-degree criminal mischief and hit and run.

During the investigation, detectives learned Wallace had allegedly thrown a semi-automatic handgun out of the window of his vehicle during the pursuit. The handgun was located and seized.
