Two hikers from Bend needed help Tuesday evening from Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue after they couldn’t find their way back to the Elk Lake Trailhead.

Jeanne Larson, 69, called law enforcement just before 5 p.m. Tuesday after she and her husband, Kurt Larson, 70, became lost while hiking, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. She explained they were safe but needed directions.

Cellphone reception in the area was poor enough to prevent searchers from hearing all of the information Larson gave over the phone. Search and rescue members tried calling her back several times to give directions. Larson said she and her husband would stay at the intersection of Horse Lake Creek Trail and Red Hill Trail to wait for help.

Four search and rescue members went to the Elk Lake Trailhead about 6:30 p.m. to try and find the couple. About two hours later, searchers heard the Larsons and found them about 4 miles from the trailhead, according to the release.

Search and rescue members took the couple back to the trailhead, arriving about 10:30 p.m.

The sheriff’s office reminds hikers to carry essentials while in the wilderness, including tools for navigation, first aid, fire and repair, sun protection, insulation, illumination, food, water and emergency shelter.
