Tumalo Falls vandalism case resolved

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Eugene announced this afternoon that it had resolved a vandalism case at Tumalo Falls that last spring drew national attention via the Internet.

A Prineville man went viral with his anger over the vandalism after he posted a photo to Facebook showing a family he had come across scratching their initials into the railing at Tumalo Falls. Brett Nelson said he just wanted to make a point about the vandalism and what he said was a rude reaction he received from a man who was there with a boy and girl. The photo drew thousands of shares on Facebook and major newspapers and television networks picked up the story.

The U.S. Forest Service investigated the vandalism, which occurred in the Deschutes National Forest, and issued a federal ticket before referring the case to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, according to Gerri Badden, spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

“A fine was assessed and restitution was paid to the U.S. Forest Service to repair the railing,” she wrote in a press release this afternoon.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office did not release the name of the vandal or vandals, saying the details of the federal ticket are not public record.
