FOOTBALL

Stanford QB Hogan a game time decision vs. Beavers — Stanford quarterback Kevin Hogan suffered a left ankle injury early in the second half of Saturday’s 41-31 upset of Southern California and will sit out most of this week’s practices, Cardinal coach David Shaw said Tuesday. Shaw said Hogan will test his ankle on Thursday. No. 21 Stanford plays at Oregon State on Friday night. “We are fortunate it was not season-ending,” Shaw said. “If he can do a little bit on Thursday, it might be a game time decision. If he plays, I hope he takes every snap. We have emergency plans if we need them.”

Ducks to play BYU in 2022 — BYU has added a game at Oregon in 2022 as part of the Cougars’ continuing strategy to raise their profile. BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe, who is trying to secure a Power 5 conference invite for the Cougars, calls the Oregon game scheduled for Sept. 10, 2022, a great opportunity to face a prominent Pac-12 program and a chance to build a long-term relationship with the school.

UCLA reinstates CB Adams — UCLA has reinstated cornerback Ishmael Adams, ending his suspension at three games following his arrest last month. Adams learned Monday that he will not face felony charges after allegedly taking a phone during a fight with an Uber driver Aug. 30. The junior was arrested on suspicion of robbery and spent two days in custody. Adams started every game in his first two seasons, earning all-conference honors last year. He could play immediately for the No. 9 Bruins at No. 16 Arizona on Saturday.

Cowboys trade for QB Cassel — Matt Cassel is headed to Dallas in a trade as the Cowboys try to bolster their depth at quarterback while Tony Romo is sidelined at least seven games because of a broken left collarbone. The Cowboys acquired Cassel from Buffalo on Tuesday, sending a fifth-round pick in 2017 to the Bills. Brandon Weeden is expected to start Sunday at home against Arizona, but Cassel has 71 starts in 90 games over 11 seasons, not counting the opener this year when he took the first snap for the Bills with Tyrod Taylor lined up at receiver.

SOCCER

Bundesliga player scores 5 goals in 9 minutes — Substitute Robert Lewandowski made German soccer history Tuesday after scoring five goals in the space of nine minutes as Bayern Munich came from behind to rout Wolfsburg 5-1. Lewandowski tied the game in the 51st, put Bayern ahead a minute later, and completed his hat trick when he hit the post, then the goalkeeper and kept going till he scored. With three goals in three minutes, 22 seconds, it was the Bundesliga’s fastest hat trick ever, bettering Michael Toennies’ five-minute feat against Karlsruher goalkeeper Oliver Kahn on Aug. 27, 1991 for Duisburg. The Poland international scored again in the 57th and claimed another goal three minutes after that, when he met Mario Goetze’s cross with a scissor kick into the top corner. Lewandowski is the first substitute in the history of the Bundesliga to score five goals in one game and they were the quickest scored by anybody. Dieter Mueller’s record of six goals in a single game, for Cologne against Werder Bremen on Aug. 17, 1977, still stands.

TRACK & FIELD

6 Russian race walkers suspended for doping — Six world-class Russian race walkers, including a reigning European champion, have been suspended after failing doping tests a year before the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Track and field’s world governing body said Tuesday that the six all tested positive during out-of-competition testing in June in the Russian city of Saransk, home to a training facility with links to more than a dozen previous doping cases. They are not allowed to compete until a final ruling is handed down by the Russian athletics federation, the IAAF said. Among those suspended is Elmira Alembekova, who won gold in the European women’s 20K race last year, and Mikhail Ryzhov, winner of the silver medal in the 50K race at the 2013 world championships. In July, Russia withdrew its entire walk team from the world championships the following month, saying it suspected possible doping, but did not reveal that the six athletes had already tested positive.
