Ever wonder what Metallica’s “Master of Puppets,” Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train” or Van Halen’s “Hot For Teacher” sound like played by a mariachi band?
Anyone who saw Los Angeles five-piece Metalachi play Volcanic Theatre Pub in March knows the answer to that question. For Bendites who are still wondering, the genre-mashing band will return to the venue Tuesday.
Before the band’s Bend debut in March, lead singer Vega de la Rockcha described Metalachi to GO! Magazine: “It’s kind of like if Cheech and Chong, GWAR and KISS kind of had, like, a threesome and had a baby.” The band tackles metal of all stripes — from classic (Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden) to grunge (Alice in Chains) to pop (the aforementioned Osbourne and Van Halen) — on traditional mariachi instruments, spiking their shows with off-the-wall skits, extended violin solos and audience sing-alongs.
Kitschy novelty act? Maybe. But it sure is a lot of fun (and I’d challenge even the most hardcore metalheads to not smile when those familiar descending power chords to “Master of Puppets” come blasting through on violin).
Metalachi; 9 p.m. Tuesday; $10 plus fees in advance, $12 at the door; Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Drive, Bend; www.volcanictheatrepub.com or 541-323-1881. —Brian McElhiney
