An 18-year-old Bend man drove through the storefront of Ray’s Food Place in La Pine after his brakes failed Wednesday morning.
Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputies responded to Ray’s at 10:19 a.m. and found the brakes on Nathaniel Stevens’ 1986 brown Ford F250 had failed while he was trying to park his car, causing him to drive through the storefront.
Stevens, concerned about the people inside the store, reversed his vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office. He then drove over an island in the parking lot, another curb, and into U.S. Highway 97.
Stevens’ pickup was pushed back into the parking lot. No one was injured, but the estimated cost of the damage to the store is more than $8,500, the sheriff’s office said.
