Oregon native and Grammy award-winning contemporary jazz trumpeter Chris Botti returns to Portland on Jan. 30 for a single concert with the Oregon Symphony.

Botti has a long-standing relationship with the Oregon Symphony, going all he way back to 1977 when he was just 15. That’s when his mother began driving him almost two hours each way from Corvallis to Portland every week for private lessons with the Symphony’s principal trumpet. Botti started playing trumpet at age 9, but has said he fell in love with jazz a few years later when he heard a Miles Davis rendition of “My Funny Valentine.”

Botti began his professional career after dropping out of college during his senior year to play with Frank Sinatra and the Nelson Riddle Orchestra in Los Angeles. While his jazz chops are undeniable and he continues to play with symphonies around the world, it has been Botti’s numerous collaborations with artists from various other genres that have brought him more widespread recognition and commercial success.

His big break came when he was invited to join Paul Simon’s band in 1990, and he continued to tour and play with Simon for much of the next decade. His debut solo album, “First Wish,” was released in 1995, and he appeared as a featured soloist on Sting’s “Brand New Day” tour from 1999 to 2001. More than a dozen albums and performances with artists ranging from cellist Yo-Yo Ma to crooner Michael Bublé and pop star Lady Gaga have cemented Botti’s reputation for both creativity and versatility.

Botti has performed many times with the Oregon Symphony, most recently in May 2014. The program for Botti’s upcoming performance has not yet been finalized; however, Jim Fullan, the Symphony’s vice president of communications, marketing and sales said, “Because of this close relationship and our experience with him, we are able to get the concert very well prepped with one rehearsal.”

Chris Botti’s Jan. 30 concert with the Oregon Symphony is at 7:30 p.m. at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland. Tickets range from $35 to $95 each, with discounts available for Symphony subscribers.
