Details: Construction of a medical building north of St. Charles Bend is well underway and will be the future home of Bend Ophthalmology when it opens this summer. The two-story building will be about 17,700 square feet, according to Brendon Warren, senior project manager for R&H Construction.

Warren said Bend Ophthalmology, which handles a variety of eye care services from its current office at 2275 NE Doctors Drive, will be moving into 8,000 square feet in the first floor of the building. The owner of the building is currently seeking tenants for the second story, which will be about 9,700 square feet, Warren said. According to Brad Hakala, project architect for Blaise Cacciola, the second floor can be configured to accommodate up to four tenants.

He added that R&H began site work in the summer, but the company didn’t officially break ground until September. Hakala said the building is expected to be completed by July.

Hakala said the building was designed with an emphasis on urban design and sustainability. Where many medical office buildings are set back from the street with a parking lot in front, the Janis building fronts on NE Conners Avenue, with the parking set to the south of the building.

“We turned the whole project 90 degrees to give it a nice street presence,” Hakala said.

He added that the design called for a solar hot-water heater and a snow-melt system to help keep the exterior of the building clear of ice and snow for elderly visitors. Additionally, Hakala said the design called for native landscaping to reduce water usage.
