Free tax help

A new, intuitive, and free-to-use software is here to put more money in your pocket this tax season.

Every year, taxpayers receive smaller returns than they’re entitled to because they’ve overlooked some simple but important credits and deductions.

This software, called Free File, walks users through an intuitive interview-style process where they answer questions to identify all the federal and state credits and deductions for which they qualify.

According to a press release, up to 25 percent of people eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), fail to claim it and miss out on a refundable federal tax credit of up to $6,200. That’s just one of many credits.

Free File is a public-private partnership between the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and tax preperation software companies.

Seventy percent of taxpayers — those who make $62,000 or less — qualify to use Free File. The program which has saved over 40 million taxpayers more than $1.3 billion in money they otherwise would have paid to a tax preparer since the software’s 2003 debut.

Visit the Oregon Free File program at www.oregon.gov/dor and search “Free File.”

A free briefing on Free File and other free tax services will be held 9:30 a.m. today at the Bend Senior Center, 1600 SE Reed Market Rd.
