NBC set to kick off another ‘Night Shift’

Q: Any idea if “The Night Shift” will be returning to NBC?

— Carol Kenzel, Elk Grove Village, Illinois

A: Better than an idea … it’s a confirmed fact. The medical drama will start its third season June 1. Stars Eoin Macken, Jill Flint, Ken Leung, Brendan Fehr, Robert Bailey Jr., JR Lemon, Tanaya Beatty and Scott Wolf all will be back.

Q: I missed the concluding episode of this season’s “Rizzoli & Isles.” Would they show previous episodes before the new season starts?

— Rosalie Garber,

Boynton Beach, Florida

A: If you receive TNT’s On Demand channel from your television supplier, you still may be able to find that season six conclusion there. While Netflix had the Angie Harmon-Sasha Alexander show’s first five seasons at the time we checked, season six hadn’t gotten there yet.

TNT’s website also offers post-telecast episodes of the series, but those have expiration dates of availability. Otherwise, the mystery show’s seventh and final season begins June 6, and the network typically shows a marathon of the preceding season’s episodes right around the time the new one begins.

Q: I read that Ian Somerhalder of “The Vampire Diaries” was married to Nikki Reed of “Sleepy Hollow.” Is that true?

— Cindy Green, Grand Junction, Colorado

A: It is, and it’s a good thing love wins out over professional competition, since their shows were on opposite each other on Fridays this season. Whether that will happen again remains to be seen; at this writing, “Vampire” had been renewed, but the fate of “Sleepy” wasn’t known yet.

The couple actually celebrates wedding anniversary No. 1 this coming week — on Tuesday — and they took that plunge two months after getting engaged (and roughly a year after they started dating). Reed had been wed previously, to “American Idol” season 10 contestant Paul McDonald — and it’s the first marriage for Somerhalder, who had been involved earlier with his former “Vampire” co-star Nina Dobrev.

Q: When will “So You Think You Can Dance” be back?

—Jennifer Sloan, Lakeland, Florida

A: The Fox series is set to start its 13th season May 30; there’s a change this time, and it has to do with the age of the contestants. Host Cat Deeley and judges Paula Abdul, Jason Derulo and Nigel Lythgoe will be back, but the show now will sport the subtitle “The Next Generation,” with young dancers teamed with what the network is terming “All-Stars.”

Q: Is Lady Gaga returning to “American Horror Story” next season?

— Doug Simpson, via email

A: She is … which may come as a surprise to those who may have thought the music superstar did last year’s “Hotel” season of the FX show just as a lark or a novelty. She won a Golden Globe Award for her work in that, which may have been a big factor in her decision to stay with the cast.

However, the series and executive producer Ryan Murphy also are famous for giving its performers new things to do — the reason such other talents as Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett have stayed with it. Nothing specific (including the subtitle) had been revealed about the forthcoming season six when this column was written.

Q: Is Melissa George’s “Heartbeat” character actually based on a real heart surgeon?

— Nicole Draper, Nashua, New Hampshire

A: Yes. A meeting with Santa Monica, California-based doctor and author (of the memoir “Heart Matters”) Kathy Magliato inspired executive-producer spouses Amy Brenneman (yes, the “Leftovers” and “Private Practice” actress) and Brad Silberling to start the development of the NBC series, and Magliato also is among its producers.

She says the experience that opened the show — having to perform emergency surgery on a fellow passenger aboard a flight, using such decidedly nonsurgical items as a credit card — actually happened to her. However, she adds bemusedly that George sees “more action” romantically on the show than she has, since the character is juggling two romantic interests (the surgeons played by Dave Annable and Don Hany).
