A Bend Chamber of Commerce program awarded $10,000 to La Pine Community Kitchen Tuesday evening.

Leadership Bend is a nine-month program through the chamber. The 2016 Leadership Bend “class of 2016” gave out the award at the Central Oregon Impact Summit, according to a release from the chamber. At the summit La Pine Community Kitchen competed against four other organizations for the grand prize.

To win, La Pine Community Kitchen had to show how workshops through Central Oregon Impact Summit helped it have a bigger impact in the community. Treehouse Therapies, a Bend- and Redmond-based nonprofit pediatric therapy clinic, won $2,500 for second place.

La Pine Community Kitchen provides nutritious hot meals, emergency food boxes, produce and clothing to those in need in southern Deschutes County, according to the release.

La Pine Community Kitchen Executive Director Kim Hafermalz expects the $10,000 will about cover electricity, gas and water bills for one year, according to the release. The kitchen serves 3,000 people annually, she said.
