Westside sewer project nearly done

Road closures and construction along NW Arizona Avenue in Bend should wrap up by the end of this month.

Since last October, portions of Arizona and nearby Colorado Avenue have been closed at times due to a city effort to upgrade a sewer line running though the area. Replacement of the line closed the Colorado Avenue bridge for a time last fall, and excavation damaged the pavement along Arizona Avenue.

The city’s sewer upgrade is intended to provide capacity for new development on the west side of town. Waste from all homes and businesses on the sewer system in Bend travels to a wastewater treatment facility east of town.

With the new pipe now in place, the east end of Arizona Avenue has been paved between Lava Road and the Bend Parkway interchange, and according to city spokeswoman Anne Aurand, the west end of Arizona will be paved within the next two weeks.

Aurand said the city moved up its paving schedule on the east end of Arizona Avenue to accommodate Market of Choice, a grocery store set to open next month between Colorado and Arizona avenues. She said the city had originally planned to pave Arizona between the new store and the Parkway in June.
