- Counseling & Mental Health
There was a time when getting help coping with mental or emotional problems was seen as a weakness. Now, people are recognizing that mental health is as important as physical health and cannot be ignored. The following resources provide assistance in treating common mental and emotional challenges that face people in today’s fast-paced world.
Substance Abuse
Alcohol and Drug
Chronic health problems, more common among the aged, often are worsened by alcohol use. Because seniors may be experiencing many health changes and taking a variety of medications, they need to be aware of the effects of combining medication with drugs or alcohol. The physical process of aging intensifies alcohol’s effects.
Close to 10 percent of people over 65 have had or are experiencing an alcohol-related problem. If you think you may have a problem with alcohol and/or the misuse of any prescription drugs or over-the-counter medications, or any other chemical dependency problems, there are a number of treatment options that provide non-judgmental, educational support.
Many inpatient and outpatient treatment programs accept Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, or have a sliding-fee scale schedule. Contact your insurance company to determine what is covered. These services are offered through private and public agencies, and clinic referrals.

Counseling and Crisis Services
When confronted with natural life changes, it’s not unusual to feel sad or anxious. The loss of a spouse or friend can leave a person feeling isolated and lonely. Many older adults also experience health problems, declining mobility, and limited resources. These experiences can lead to depression and mood swings.
It’s normal to grieve over a significant loss. But, if grief is prolonged, serious physical and mental health problems can develop. It’s important to consult with a doctor and/or licensed psychotherapist, as clinical depression can often be treated. Other factors, such as poor nutrition or adverse drug interactions, may also contribute to depression. Doctors may refer patients for specialized treatment, which is usually covered by insurance. Many health clinics and hospitals also provide counseling and will bill insurance.
Counseling and support services are available in Crook, Deschutes, and Jefferson Counties to help people during crisis or life transitions. The following list includes agencies that provide for outpatient psychotherapy; supportive individual/group counseling; information and educational resources.
