Douglas Campbell Smith died on June 23, 2016, at St. Charles Hospital in Bend, Oregon after 51⁄2 year battle with multiple myeloma. He was a greatly loved husband, father and grandfather and will be sorely missed by his many friends. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Margaret Smith, sister, Noel Frances O’Connor, son, Rand Buckner Smith, daughter, Eugenia Campbell Ryder, and stepdaughters, Amanda Clare Smith, and Rebecca Louise Smith. Also grandchildren,Emerson Vail Smith, Campbell Scott Smith, Finley Rand Smith, Paige Kathleen Ryder, Christopher William Ryder, James William Paul Queripel, David William George Queripel and Katie Nicole Taylor.

Doug was born in the Stanford Hospital, Palo Alto, California, on July 11, 1939, to Bertha Campbell Smith and Charles Kirtland Smith. After attending grammar schools in San Jose and Saratoga, and high school at Los Gatos Union High School he earned a BA in Art in 1962 and a MA in Art-Painting in 1967 from California State University San Jose. Doug moved to Oregon in 1968, where he was Professor of Art at Oregon College of Education (now Western Oregon University) in Monmouth until 1973. That year he took a position at Central Oregon Community College as Professor of Art and became Professor Emeritus upon his retirement in 1995. During his tenure there he was granted a Fulbright teacher exchange to Newcastle College of Further Education, England where he spent the school year 1989 to 1990.

After his retirement, he and his wife, Jenny lived on the island of Cyprus for a year, where they were involved with The Cyprus School of Art and during this time they painted extensively and exhibited at The Gloria Gallery in Nicosia. After returning to Oregon they continued to travel to Europe to paint. In recent years they discovered the Umbrian region of Italy and returned there frequently, painting watercolors on location and work on canvas in the studio on their return.

Doug was a serious and accomplished artist. During his long career he exhibited extensively in the Northwest, in addition to shows in California and Europe. He was also an enthusiastic teacher and encouraged many aspiring artists to achieve their full potential.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 27th Street, Bend on Wednesday, July 6, at 10:00 a.m. There will be a reception to follow the service at the St. Francis Community Center. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Cancer Research Institute.
