State issues advisory for Odell Lake

High toxin levels at Odell Lake in Lane County prompted the Oregon Health Authority to advise people not to drink the water from the lake and to avoid ingesting it while swimming, water skiing or boating.
The Thursday advisory noted blue-green algae in the lake at levels that can harm humans. Symptoms include numbness, dizziness, skin irritation, diarrhea, nausea and other problems. Children and pets face higher risks. Those eating fish from the water should rinse it in clean water and remove all fat, skin and organs before cooking because toxins can collect in those tissues.
Meanwhile, a health advisory issued earlier this month for Agency and Upper Klamath lakes now covers only Howard Bay, located in the southwest corner of Upper Klamath Lake and northwest of Klamath Falls in Klamath County.
The bacteria can bloom in warm weather and produce harmful toxins. For more information, call 971-673-0400 or 1-877-290-6767, and visit http://public.health.oregon.gov/HealthyEnvironments/Recreation/HarmfulAlgaeBlooms/Pages/index.aspx
