‘DON’T BREATHE’

Rating: R for terror, violence, disturbing content and language including sexual references.

What it’s about: A crew of teen burglars in Detroit targets a blind man, who turns out to be not so helpless.

The kid-attractor factor: Teens will definitely be drawn to this unrelenting horror flick for the thrills, chills and scares.

Good lessons/bad lessons: Well, these kids certainly learn the downside of home invasion burglary when they tangle with the wrong victim, but in general, there are no good guys and no bad guys, everyone takes on the role of victim or victimizer in this rather brutal and all-too-ripped-from-the-headlines horror story.

Violence: There’s a lot of brutal violence as the robbers attempt to escape the prison of this house — guns, combat, knives, you name it.

Language: Frequent use of strong language/swearing.

Sexuality: Several references to sex or sexual violence, a scene of attempted sexual assault.

Drugs: None.

Parents advisory: This is an intense, terrifying horror movie with a lot of dark and disturbing themes. Not appropriate for younger teens or kids.

‘SOUTHSIDE WITH YOU’

Rating: PG-13 for brief strong language, smoking, a violent image and a drug reference.

What it’s about: This romantic dramedy follows the first date of the first couple of the U.S., Barack Obama and Michelle Robinson Obama.

The kid-attractor factor: This might not attract many kids, but could definitely be a good choice for older kids and teens who are fans of the prez and politics.

Good lessons/bad lessons: The two brilliant lawyers learn they’ve found their match, and they challenge their own assumptions and judgments while learning more about each other and themselves.

Violence: During a screening of “Do the Right Thing,” there’s a scene of police brutality and a riot shown on screen.

Language: One instance of the F-word.

Sexuality: None.

Drugs: Cigarette smoking, a few beers consumed, a reference to marijuana.

Parents advisory: Despite the PG-13 elements, this would be appropriate for kids, if they’re interested. It’s an inspiring story about the humble beginnings and mutually respectful relationship of the President and First Lady.
