Submitted photoEmily Blunt stars in the new thriller “The Girl on the Train.”

‘THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN’

Rating: R for violence, sexual content, language and nudity.

What it’s about: Adapted from the best-selling novel, the story concerns an alcoholic woman attempting to solve a missing persons case through her blackouts.

The kid-attractor factor: The star factor of Emily Blunt and erotic thriller genre may draw teen audiences.

Good lessons/bad lessons: Individuals have their own truths that create a whole picture when put together. Be wary of husbands and empower women.

Violence: Rachel fantasizes about murder and violence at times. There is one killing via blunt instrument and one stabbing, as well as a blow to the head. Rachel remembers her own mutually abusive marriage. Dead bodies are seen on screen.

Language: Occasional strong language and swearing.

Sexuality: Several graphic sex scenes and nudity.

Drugs: A lot of booze.

Parents advisory: The graphic sex makes this inappropriate for younger teens and children. Older teens will most likely be able to handle the material. In this case, there’s far more sex than violence that makes it inappropriate for younger audiences.

‘THE BIRTH OF A NATION’

Rating: R for disturbing violent content and some brief nudity.

What it’s about: A biopic of Nat Turner, who led a bloody slave rebellion in 1831.

The kid-attractor factor: The history-lesson aspect, as well as the film’s high profile may attract teen audiences.

Good lessons/bad lessons: God calls upon his servants to do what’s right, even if it might be violent. Always protect and avenge you and yours.

Violence: There’s quite a bit of violence which illustrates the horrors of slavery including whippings, shootings and gruesome torture. There’s also quite a bit of implied sexual violence. That’s all before the rebellion, which includes ax murders, beheadings, shootings, stabbings, cannon blasts, and eventually, graphic lynchings.

Language: None

Sexuality: The implied rapes and sexual exploitation, some nudity during a wedding night scene, some nudity during an African ritual Nat experienced as a child.

Drugs: None.

Parents advisory: The violence, especially the slave torture, and the culminating rebellion is tough to take for anyone, and may be too extreme for younger teens. The nudity and sexuality is fine for teens, but the rapes may require some conversation. Definitely not appropriate for children.
