Michael Martinez, better known by his stage name, Meekoh, is a pop and R&B singer-songwriter who performs solo and with a group, splitting his time between Bend and Los Angeles. He released his debut album, “Evolve,” last year. The follow-up “Fire and Diamonds” — from which this song, “Over You,” is taken — is slated for sometime in November.
Q: What’s the story behind this song — how was it written, recorded, etc.?
A: I wrote it in Los Angeles over a period of time. I wrote it in L.A., and then I came back to Bend for a while (and) finished writing it here. I wrote it — actually, it’s kind of funny. It started from one of my buddies, his name is Ryan, he’s down in L.A. … He went through a breakup, and it was one of those breakups where like the girl just wanted still to be friends after the heartbreak, and he was kind of, like, leave me alone, like, get far away, you know. Like, let me heal.
Q: What’s the story inside this song — what’s it about?
A: I just know that feeling of going through those relationships where your heart’s broken, but that other person, you know, they still care and they want to make sure you’re OK, or if you want to go to coffee, let’s talk about it, how’s your family? So anyways, this was kind of my way of just being able to write and express what it’s like on that side where you’re like, you know what, just leave me alone, I need to get over you. So yeah, that’s kind of how that song came to be.
