‘THE ACCOUNTANT’
Rating: R for strong violence and language throughout.
What it’s about: An autistic accountant who cooks the books for the most dangerous criminals in the world.
The kid-attractor factor: Stars Ben Affleck and Anna Kendrick.
Good lessons/bad lessons: Family is everything, embrace those who are different and think differently — just because they aren’t like you doesn’t make them lesser.
Violence: This movie deals with assassins and hit jobs and billion-dollar crimes — there’s a lot of violence. Point-blank executions, hand-to-hand fistfights, car crashes, explosives. Small children battle a martial arts master.
Language: A significant amount of strong language and swearing.
Sexuality: Almost none, just a brief almost-kiss moment between characters.
Drugs: None.
Parents advisory: The issue in this action-financial thriller is the extreme violence, which is presented as a necessary part of this line of work and a means to an end. Not much importance placed on the number of people killed in the film. Would be OK for older teens.
‘KEVIN HART: WHAT NOW?’
Rating: R for some sexual material and language throughout.
What it’s about: Stand-up comedian and actor Kevin Hart’s latest big-screen stand-up comedy film.
The kid-attractor factor: Kevin Hart’s popularity is no joke, and he’s the star of many favorite action-comedies.
Good lessons/bad lessons: Family is important and should be celebrated and loved, embrace yourself and all of your quirks, don’t be afraid to share who you are.
Violence: There’s a violent fight scene with several bloody murders during the Bond-themed opening sketch.
Language: Frequent strong language and swearing.
Sexuality: Many graphic sex jokes.
Drugs: None.
Parents advisory: Hart’s material about family and relationships will appeal to an adult crowd, not kids. The graphic sex talk and swearing is inappropriate for kids, but would be OK for most teens.
