Boo-tiful homemade Halloween favors

Whether you’re having a big Halloween party or just looking to add a little seasonal spirit to a family dinner, a small favor can fill the bill. Use these cute holders to fill with fall candies or add a special small toy or treat to your holiday place setting.

Or, if you’re really ambitious, make enough to hand out to trick-or-treaters. They’re all easy to make, and kids can help, too.

Treat bag

What you’ll need:

• Small, premade fabric gift bags

• Fusible web

• Basic sewing and pressing supplies

• Clip art patterns

Making the bags: Using free online clip art, print out the desired motif and size it to fit the bag. If you don’t have a computer, look for coloring book patterns, trace a cookie cutter shape or draw your own design.

Trace the desired motifs onto the paper backing of the fusible web, and cut out on the drawn line.

Following the manufacturer’s instructions for fusing, apply the motif to the bag front.

Poppers

Reminiscent of British poppers that create a bang when a magic strip is pulled, these handy tube containers are great for filling with candy or other treats. Make them using crepe paper or fabric for the coverings.

What you’ll need (for each):

• Empty toilet paper roll

• Fabric or crepe paper

• ½ yard ribbon, 1-inch wide

• Double-sided tape

• Paper (optional)

Making the popper: Cut the fabric rectangle 6 inches longer than the circumference of the tube, plus 1 inch. Center and wrap the covering around the cardboard tube and secure with tape. Tie one end with the ribbon.

Fill the tube with candy or other treats through the open end.

Tie off the second end. If desired, add a paper or fabric wrap, taping in place over the tube covering. To make your own wrapper, use free online clip art to print on plain or colored paper.

Candy corn treat holder

What you’ll need (makes two):

• Felt rectangles: one each of white, yellow and orange, 9-by-12 inches

• Fusible web

•  2⁄3 yard ribbon, ¼-inch wide

• Hot glue gun and glue

Making the cone: Trace one 3-inch and one 5-inch circle onto the fusible web backing paper. Rough-cut them apart.

Following the manufacturer’s instructions, fuse the 3-inch circle to the wrong side of the white felt. Fuse the 5-inch circle to the wrong side of the orange felt.

Trace one 7½-inch circle onto the wrong side of the yellow felt.

Cut out the circles on the marked lines.

Matching the centers, fuse the white circles to the orange circles, then fuse the white/orange circles to the yellow circle. Be sure all edges are pressed firmly.

Cut the layered felt circle in half. Shape each section into a cone, and glue the overlapping edges.

Cut a 12-inch length of ribbon for the handle. Knot each end of the ribbon. Glue the ribbon to each side of the candy corn cone.

Now that you’ve completed those tricks, it’s time to go hunt for treats.
