- Submitted photoTom Hanks and Felicity Jones star in Columbia PIctures’ “Inferno.”
“INFERNO”
Rating: PG-13 for sequences of action and violence, disturbing images, some language, thematic elements and brief sensuality.
What it’s about: In the third film adapted from the Dan Brown novels about religious themed mysteries, Robert Langdon attempts to stop a global infectious disease outbreak.
The kid-attractor factor: Star Tom Hanks, familiarity with the franchise.
Good lessons/bad lessons: It’s inhumane to consider taking life in order to save the planet.
Violence: Some harrowing chase and fight scenes, including knife fights and stabbings, shootings and drownings. A graphic image of a dead body, as well as disturbing visions of a sick and wretched mob.
Language: One instance of strong language.
Sexuality: An intimate moment between lovers, but no nudity.
Drugs: None.
Parents advisory: Fine for teens, too violent for kids.
“AMERICAN PASTORAL”
Rating: R for some strong sexual material, language and brief violent images.
What it’s about: The story of a suburban New Jersey family torn apart by the political tumult of the late 1960s.
The kid-attractor factor: Star Dakota Fanning, though this is a sure sign of her maturation into more adult roles.
Good lessons/bad lessons: Let your family help you when you need it, don’t push them away. Larger political issues can look very different on an individual level.
Violence: There’s an explosion in their small town that kills a man, and depictions of the 1967 Newark riots with police violence and shooting. Seymour (Ewan McGregor) brandishes a gun and threatens a girl. Violence is often spoken about.
Language: Fanning’s rebellious character curses frequently.
Sexuality: A scene of manipulative seduction — no nudity but thematically graphic.
Drugs: None, some drinking.
Parents advisory: Though the themes are adult, this would be fine for teens.
