Construction continues on part of a U.S. Forest Service trail project to revamp the Rimrock Trailhead — commonly known as Good Dog — and connect it to the agency’s new visitor center and Bend’s city limits.
The U.S. Forest Service continues work along Cascade Lakes Highway. Part of it entails excavating and getting ready for the construction of a planned new undercrossing for the trail beneath the road near the Rimrock Trailhead.
Work at that trailhead itself is largely complete. The trailhead already connects to the city along the Haul Road trail. The Forest Service plans to pave that trail and connect Rimrock Trailhead to the Cascade Lakes Welcome Station. The full paved trail from the station to city limits will total more than 3 miles. Work will soon wind down for winter and start up again next year.
The Forest Service aims to pave and finish the trail by late summer or early fall 2017, although the new undercrossing could take longer. The Deschutes National Forest expects the whole project will help people experience the forest without having to drive there, so they can instead walk from Bend.
