Inventerprise 2016, sponsored by Bend Research, challenged students to make their schools better by inventing new building designs, classrooms, furnishings, athletic fields, or technologies that will improve their education experience.

The following local students are Inventerprise 2016 winners:

• Sophia Gonzalez and Hannah Tranby, of Pilot Butte Middle School, created “Safer Quaker Bleachers” to win the grand prize of the middle school Inventerprise contest. They designed reinforced bleachers in case of an earthquake.

Teen Feats

• Five students from Redmond Proficiency Academy won prizes in the high school division of the Inventerprise contest. David Novotny invented a working model of his pedal desk with a hand crank that lights up a beacon or sounds an alarm, which enables students to burn off some energy while powering their school. Sam Gilbertson and Lyn Trail modeled a classroom after fish hatcheries. Arely Aguilar and Lily Harrang analyzed the would-be energy savings from making their school meat-free and concluded this was the easiest way to conserve energy on a large scale.
