Fibula injuries may have claimed what is left of the season for two of the NFL’s young, promising quarterbacks.

If the Tennessee Titans make the playoffs, they will not have quarterback Marcus Mariota, a former Oregon Ducks standout.

Mariota broke his right leg in a 38-17 loss at Jacksonville on Saturday, a crushing setback for a team that had so many things go right while winning three in a row and seven of 10 previously.

In Oakland, Derek Carr broke his fibula in the Raiders’ 33-25 win over Indianapolis. After a sack by the Colts’ Trent Cole in the fourth quarter, Carr left the field unable to put any pressure on his right leg and was clearly in pain.

Raiders coach Jack Del Rio said Carr will have surgery today, but is out indefinitely.

With 3,933 yards and 28 TDs for the 12-3 Raiders, Carr’s name has been mentioned frequently in the MVP race.

Mariota passed for 3,426 yards and 26 TDs in 15 games in his second NFL season, helping the Titans to an 8-7 record.

“That breaks my heart, man,” Titans offensive tackle Taylor Lewan said. “Love him. That guy’s an awesome dude. For that to happen to him, it’s unfair.”
